UCOL Hits Pause Button on Summer School

Whanganui UCOL is reviewing and revitalizing Summer School of the Arts, in view of lower enrolments. 
Whanganui UCOL Principal Julia Pedley has announced that in the meantime the annual Summer School will not go ahead in January, with the exception of the Glass classes, providing an opportunity for a review. Read more
 

 

 

Whanganui Summer School 2011

17-21 January, 10am - 5pm

SS 021 Carmen Simmonds - Basic Glass Casting $600
This will be a fun workshop that will give beginners taste for glass casting and the more experienced students the chance to experiment! You can expect some of the specialist techniques of creating textures on wax, understanding how to apply their ideas onto a simple form and mixing their palette of colours.

Carmen graduated from Wanganui UCOL in 2002 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Glass.  Since then she has been working full time from her Wanganui-based Studio. She specialises in mould making techniques designed to produce surface texture and movement.  Carmen’s work is exhibited within New Zealand, USA, Australia and the United Kingdom.

SS 0 20 David Traub- Hot Glass for beginners and intermediate $480
This class is aimed at students who either have little no prior skills in hot glass.   The novice will be instructed in the techniques of manipulation of hot glass as well as the use of the various tools used in these processes.  Those students with some prior skills will have the basics reinforced while instruction in some of the more advanced processes of glass blowing are introduced.  By the end of the class students should be able to blow basic shapes with some degree of confidence.

Born and brought up in New York, David Traub gained his Masters degree Stourbridge in England before emigrating to head the Glass programmes at Wanganui Polytechnic. David’s work is exhibited in public collections throughout Europe, the USA, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.  David was the recipient of the prestigious Cavalier New Zealand Artists in Glass Award in 2008, and his work was included in the 2009/2010 major travelling exhibition ‘Looking Glass:Reflecting ideas”.
