2010 STAR PROGRAMMES – Information for secondary teachers

UCOL welcomes the opportunity to offer a wide variety of STAR programmes from our campuses in Palmerston North, Wairarapa and Whanganui. Below is a brief
outline of a selection of programmes/units available for STAR. In addition, programmes can
be tailored to meet any options you may have identified as being a necessary part of your
senior school curriculum. If you have a preference for a programme being offered at one of
the other campuses, we will endeavour to accommodate your request.

DELIVERY OF PROGRAMMESThere are five delivery options available to schools for UCOL STAR programmes.

  1. UCOL staff teach the programme at the UCOL campuses.
  2. UCOL staff teach the programme at the school.
  3. Articulation - Schools purchase teaching packages from UCOL and teach the programme
    at the School.
  4. Students may choose to attend sessions with the mainstream classes during the week for
the STAR unit standards and UCOL Modules - timetables available on request.
  5. Any combination of the above.

Note: All programmes are subject to content changes.

PROGRAMME BOOKINGS

Schools may make block bookings during the 2009 academic year for STAR programmes
commencing in 2010. Bookings can be made through your STAR Co-ordinator. Once student
names have been confirmed for respective STAR programmes, a contract will be issued based
on student numbers at the time of request.

GATEWAY PROGRAMMESGateway is an exciting new programme available to some senior secondary school students.
It offers students an opportunity to experience workplaces first hand while engaging in
structured workplace learning. It is a programme designed to assist schools to make
learning relevant to the needs of all students, and to ensure a smooth transition from school
to employment. It also enables schools to broaden students options by offering them
both traditional and workplace learning integrated with unit standards from the National
Qualification Framework (NZQA).

Gateway students benefit from workplace experience in a wide variety of industries some of
which are: hospitality, automotive, engineering and building construction.

UCOL can provide services for Gateway including workbooks and assessment for some unit
standards.

The school contracts UCOL on a Contract for Service basis to supply unit standard
workbooks and assessment services either at the workplace or the School.

As Gateway students are not enrolled with UCOL it is the Schools responsibility for recording
student results and forwarding them to NZQA.

ARTICULATION PROGRAMMESThe following programmes can be taught by Articulation. This means that the school
purchases the teaching package from UCOL and takes responsibility for the teaching.
UCOL as the accredited provider, provides support with the assessment process and
moderation.

The Units can be:

  • Introduced as stand alone units
  • Incorporated into existing programmes
  • Be developed as either extension or alternative programmes within the school curriculum
The implementation of these packages into the school curriculum allows students to attain
credits and staircase to higher education.

Requirements

  • In order to offer some of these programmes the schools’ facilities must be approved
  • Teachers must submit a current curriculum vitae
  • Schools must undertake to complete UCOL STAR enrolment forms and contract
    before course commences
  • Depending on the schools facilities and programme, students may be required to
attend a block course at UCOL to complete any practical units
  • The moderation process will be explained with each programme but will include the
submission to UCOL of examples of marked written work
  • Workshops for teaching staff will be provided as required to facilitate the teaching/
    moderation process.

Personal contact with a UCOL lecturer is necessary prior to the commencement of an
articulation programme. The curriculum vitae of the secondary school teacher delivering the
programme is to be submitted.

All student written work must be submitted to UCOL for moderation purposes before the
end of the school year. Visits by a UCOL lecturer can be arranged on request. All articulation
programme students must complete STAR enrolment forms and forward to UCOL.
(An orientation to UCOL will be included with each programme).

NOTIFICATION OF RESULTSStudents will be issued with a STAR Academic Record on completion of a STAR programme,
or a Statement of Attendance on meeting the 80 per cent attendance requirement for a STAR Taster
programme.

STAR Academic Records and Statements of Attendance will be forwarded to the School for
presentation to students.

It is the schools responsibility to register students and unit standard outcomes with the New
Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA).

Once students and units have been registered, NZQA will forward a report to the school advising the National Student Index (NSI) (hook-on) number and unit standards registered for
each student.
