Accommodation for Short Course Competency based assessment students
If you are enrolled for the Short Course Competency based assessment you may only be in Palmerston North for 3 - 4 weeks and then may have to transfer to another city or town for placement. So please make sure you do not book accommodation for any more than 3 - 4 weeks.

Homestays
Home stay accommodation is where a student lives with a carefully selected New Zealand family. UCOL can arrange this type of accommodation for you before you leave your own country.
You will be provided with your own room and at least two meals a day. Home stay allows you to concentrate on your studies and is also a great way for you to learn as much as possible about New Zealanders and the way we live. It provides you with an opportunity to practise your English and get used to life in New Zealand while you have the support of a friendly and caring New Zealand family.
The cost of home stay accommodation in Palmerston North is $200.00 per week and there is a one-off placement fee of $150.

@ The Hub offers both short term and long term accommodation for students and is ideally situated approximately 100 metres from the UCOL campus. @ The Hub is not owned by UCOL but our International Student Co-ordinators have assessed the accommodation and the assessment report is available on request.

UCOL has not assessed any of the accommodation listed below. We have supplied contact details but are not guaranteeing the quality of the accommodation in any way.
In most hostels you will have your own room and may have your own bathroom and telephone (this varies from place to place) you will be provided with furniture and will share laundry and cooking facilities. There is also usually a shared common room. Some hostels will provide meals. Prices vary according to the facilities provided.

Flatting
If you want this type of accommodation it is our recommendation that you stay for the first four weeks in the short term accommodation offered by @the hub as it can take some time to find a suitable place. You will be responsible for providing your own furniture, your share of power/water/phone bills, cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and the rental agreement.
Here is an example of what it may cost you to share a flat with two other students. All costs are given in New Zealand dollars. These are approximate figures only. Costs may vary according to individual circumstances.
Bond (equivalent to two weeks rent to be paid in advance ) $600 (your share $200)
Two weeks rent in advance $600(your share $200)
On top of this there will be the regular expenses
Power $180 per month (your share ($60.00)
Phone $32 rental per month tolls calls will be extra (your share 11.00)
Gas $60 per month (your share $20)
Food $600 per month (your share $200)
Rent $1200 per month (your share $400)
You will also need to make sure that you have allowed enough money for buying furniture, bedding, cooking utensils and other household items

If you wish UCOL to arrange accommodation on your behalf it is very important that you complete the accommodation application form and return it at least 1 month before you intend to arrive in New Zealand.
