The Dean Trades and Technology is a new role.


This senior manager will provide leadership for a range of programmes including Construction, Joinery, Engineering, Electrical and Automotive. The Dean is responsible for
educational, research and academic processes  and for providing a sustainable quality learning environment. The Dean will manage the faculty programme portfolio dynamically, working in collaboration at all levels of the organisation and with professional bodies. Strong industry knowledge and networks will be essential.


This role requires management experience, tertiary qualifi cation in related discipline, and
industry experience.

Purpose Statement:

  • To ensure the sustainable provision of a quality learning environment that meets statutory obligations, UCOL policy and academic processes, and strives to meet the expectations of UCOL’s communities and students.

  • To provide leadership in developing a strong and vital Trades and Technology faculty which focuses on enhancing student experiences and outcomes and profiles UCOL’s reputation with industry, employers and regional communities.

  • To provide longer term vision for the faculty and embed a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Deputy Chief Executive - Strategy

 

Key Accountability Areas:

  • Academic Leadership
    Provide academic leadership to the Faculty ensuring high standards in the delivery of Faculty programmes which meet the needs of students and UCOL’s stakeholders.

    Ensure strong industry networks with all trades areas so that the faculty understands and is responsive to industry requirements.

    Manage resources to ensure that the Faculty continuously improves academic excellence.

    Ensure compliance with UCOL’s Academic Quality Management System, Academic Statute and academic policies.

  • Educational Delivery
    Ensure Students are provided with a quality learning environment and supported to achieve their goals.

    Ensure quality standards and delivery targets are met and maintained.

    Manage and develop the Faculty programme portfolio dynamically.

    Foster a range of new approaches to the delivery and distribution of programmes and services.

    Oversee systems and processes which enable UCOL to deliver on its goals, strategies, vision and mission.

    Ensure client satisfaction, process excellence, high quality financial management and ongoing innovation within the Faculty.

  • Financial
    To take responsibility for the development, monitoring and prudent management of the Faculty’s budgets while ensuring ongoing viability of programmes within that portfolio. Undertake annual operational planning particularly within areas of responsibility.

  • Innovation
    Ensure innovation in product delivery and distribution, client management and process development.

    Participate in the identification and implementation of business development opportunities.

    Support the use of new technology related to delivery.


  • Management
    Manage and improve the performance and efficiency of Faculty staff.

    Facilitate the professional development of Faculty staff, and promote the need for them to maintain technical industry relevancy.

    Effectively manage staff in line with current legislation, employment contracts and internal policies.

    Ensure that the Faculty achieves targets and objectives through effective management.

    Ensure that key legislative and regulatory requirements are met.

    Take a proactive approach to risk management and health and safety.

    Provide direction and decision making within delegated authority.

Person Specification 

Qualifications:

Technical and Professional Knowledge and Skills
Has the required level of technical and professional skill or knowledge in position-related areas.

A Post Graduate qualification would be advantageous.
Relevant tertiary qualifications.

 

Experience:

Demonstrated management experience in core areas of the role.
Proven experience at a senior level in the tertiary educations system is highly desirable.

 

Attributes and Skills:

Ability to link theory to practice.
Commercial and entrepreneurial focus balanced with a client focus.
