Process for applying for a scholarship
The process for awarding most of the scholarships on this list is as follows:
1. The scholarship or award is advertised.
2. You decide which scholarship(s) you are eligible to apply for and submit written applications according to the guidelines given.
3. The Scholarships Committee meets to decide on successful applicants.
4. The committee informs successful and unsuccessful applicants.
5. Scholarships are presented at the UCOL graduation ceremony in April.
Tips for applying for a scholarship
Your written application is a vital part of the process because this is what the committee will use to make their decision. Your application needs to do three things:
1. It says why you want and/or need the scholarship.
2. It says why you think you deserve to be awarded it.
3. It provides evidence to support what you have said in 1 and 2 above.
Take time to prepare your application carefully and thoroughly.
Steps in preparing your application
Step 1
Plan ahead. Find out what scholarships are available and when the applications close. Allow time to prepare your applications.
Step 2
Examine the criteria for each scholarship carefully. Do you meet the requirements? Some scholarships are offered only to people of a certain age or place of residence. Some are aimed at particular programmes, some are for beginning tertiary students, and some are open to students who are already part way through their course.
Don applying for scholarships for which you are not eligible.
Step 3
Prepare and collect the evidence you need to support your application. For most scholarships you will need a CV and a written reference (not older than 12 months) that will support you. You cannot use a family member or a staff member for your reference. Make sure you provide only what is relevant to the particular scholarship(s) you are applying for. It may take time to put these things together, but it is worth doing this well.
Step 4
Complete the application form for each scholarship you are applying for. Make sure you do this as fully as you can but keep it relevant.
Step 5
Present your application well. Keep it concise but relevant. Make sure you include enough information, but not too much. Write neatly and check your spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and language. If you are unsure about grammar, spelling and punctuation, have someone else check it for you. The panel will be more impressed by a thorough and well presented application.
Step 6
Submit your application on time!
If you need help or advice with preparing your application, including your CV, contact the Learning Support Coordinator. Group sessions will be held in February/March to help you prepare.
