The Whanganui UCOL Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance programme is set to hold auditions this Friday for student places in its mid-year intake.

The intensive music programme covers all aspects of contemporary music, including written music theory, aural training, practical keyboard, composition, music writing and recording software, recording original compositions and learning about the current music climate.

Whanganui UCOL Contemporary Music Lecturer Michael Franklin-Browne says students on the programme enjoy performing at gigs, covering various genres, and developing skills on their primary instrument, which can include voice.

"We also teach how to set up P.A's and book gigs and tours," he says.

Alongside lecturing, Mr. Franklin-Browne plays regularly and is the drummer for rock band Head like a Hole.

"I have loved coming back to Whanganui and seeing the music community thrive. The UCOL music course is a great addition to the local music landscape.  We intend on working more closely with the Whanganui Musicians club and the Gat Shack."

The Whanganui Musicians Club will be offering free entry to UCOL students on club nights at the Savage Club on the first Friday of every month, as well as a $500 scholarship/award for one student per intake that shows a commitment to music, creativity and contribution to the course.

Current Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance student Toni Jo Wirepa says that she has really surprised herself with what she has learnt during the programme.

"I come from a musical family, and music has always been my passion but there were a few things around music that really scared me. Reading music and using music software were things that I didn't expect to be able to do, but once you get your head around them, it's amazing."

The Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance auditions will be held on Friday 10-1pm at the Whanganui UCOL Music department with further auditions to be confirmed. Those interested can call Mike on 021 249 7773 for more information or head to www.ucol.ac.nz.
