People wanting to get a start in the local construction and roading industries will be excited to hear that new training options are becoming available in Levin.

UCOL is leasing premises in Oxford Street to teach from. We believe the time is right to re-establish a presence in the area to support economic growth.“Working closely with the Horowhenua community to build local capacity and assist employers and industries to have the skilled workforce they need is a top priority,” said Dr Jerry Shearman.“We would love to talk more with local employers about how we can help.“We want to be a part of growing Horowhenua by providing training opportunities for jobs that the Region needs.”UCOL is responding to improved economic development signals, reported shortages of workers in construction, and expected growth in housing and population.Planning is underway to run two qualifications, one in construction and one in roading, both starting in August. The entry level qualifications cover safe working practices and students will gain a range of basic infrastructure works or trade skills that will help them with more training and/or employment in the infrastructure and construction industries. More details about the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 2) and National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills (Level 2) are available on www.ucol.ac.nz. The programmes run for 15 weeks full-time.Registrations of interest are being taken on 0800 GO UCOL or emailing enquiry@ucol.ac.nz. In 2018 more qualifications will be added to meet local needs. UCOL already works with the Horowhenua Learning Centre (HLC) to offer qualifications from their premises and this will continue.“We want to add value to existing training options and work with local companies such as HLC to extend them,” said Jerry.
