With the Academy Barbering Programme, you will gain hands-on experience in UCOL training salons. Our highly talented lecturers will teach you cutting skills, help you use barbering tools and equipment, and show you how to apply finishing products. You will also learn about the working environment and influences that shaped how barbering has developed.

How to apply
If you're interested in applying for this programme, talk to your careers advisor at school. Application is arranged in partnership with your parents/caregivers and your school. Once you've talked to everyone required, you can fill out the application form as follows:
 

 Course Hours & Duration

Delivered from 9am - 3pm in each location:

Palmerston North - Mondays 
Whanganui - Tuesdays
Masterton - Fridays 


 Career & Study Outcomes

Successful completion of the UCOL Academy Barbering Programme is the first step in a journey. Equipped with new skills and a taste for the industry, you will know what you need to do to pursue a career in barbering. If this is for you, you can undertake further tertiary studies in:

NZ Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4

 Course Information

This programme comprises 28 Credits.

Unit Standard 10645 (Level 3) (Version 4) (3 Credits)
Describe the development of barbering.

Unit Standard 31946 (Level 3) (Version 1) (5 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of skin and hair for barbering.

Unit Standard 10646 (Level 2) (Version 4) (20 Credits)
Apply initial barbering techniques.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

For year 11 - 13 secondary school learners (NZ Citizens, permanent residents or learners with an applicable visa allowing them to be enrolled in a secondary school).

Applications are to be received from participating schools.

Recommended school subjects include:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Physical Education
  • Biology
