If you're interested in pursuing a career in the beauty industry, UCOL’s one-year Certificate in Beauty Services will provide you the broad range of skills you need to get started.

You'll learn the core treatments offered in the ever-expanding beauty industry, like facials, manicures, make-up, lash tinting, waxing, and brow shaping. There is also a theory component that covers business awareness, professional conduct, systems of the body, and the theory behind the treatments you perform.

The Certificate in Beauty Services will give you the professionalism and confidence to perform treatments on clients and establish relationships. 

Career & Study Outcomes

Graduates of the Certificate in Beauty Services will have a range of highly desirable employment skills for the industry, including:

  • The ability to work independently or as a team member

Course Information

The Certificate in Beauty Services, Level 4 consists of six courses containing 110 compulsory course credits and two elective pathways options of 10 credits each.

    • Advising clients on selection and use of cosmetics and toiletries
    • Performing cosmetic services and facials
    • Performing skin analysis

    • Demonstrate knowledge of chemistry in the application of beauty services
    • Demonstrate knowlege of the electrical currents and physics principles used for beauty services

Domestic Entry Requirements

NCEA Level 2 (including 10 Literacy credits at Level 2 and 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1)

OR

Equivalent academic achievement

OR

On a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Executive Dean

International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international student applicants.

English Language Proficiency
International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (or equivalent including TOEFL) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5. UCOL is a TOEFL iBT testing centre. The English Proficiency test is accepted for English language entry into all UCOL programmes.

Under 20 years of age

For international applicants under 20 years of age who do not hold NCEA, International Academic Qualifications Entry Criteria apply.

Advice & Guidance

The Certificate in Beauty Services comprises 120 credits.

Work experience
As part of your studies you'll be involved in running the beauty clinic at UCOL and performing beauty services for the public under the support of your lecturer. 

You'll be required to wear a tunic (supplied by UCOL) and comply with UCOL and industry standards of personal presentation.

Recognition of prior learning

Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course or unit standards have already been met.

Application checklist
It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)
  • Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)
  • Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme
  • Check if you're eligible for additional support or a scholarship. If you're 19 years or younger, you may be eligible to enrol in one of our free Youth Transition programmes.

Note that you will need to provide any verified documents in person, via post or email.

Required Kits
In order to carry out your practical treatments, you are required to purchase the following equipment:

  • A make-up brush kit to be ordered from Beauty Gallery of approximately $70, from 0800 573 5118 / (09) 573 5118, contact person Tania Brown or email info@beautygallery.co.nz
  • At least two pairs of tweezers, also from Beauty Gallery, approximately $30
Kits will be delivered to your address with a courier cost of $11.

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Trading as Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is accredited to teach it.
