In this foundation course you will gain skills, knowledge and the confidence needed to enter the workforce at entry level or further your study at a higher level.  You will gain NCEA level 1 unit standards in numeracy and literacy. Explore career options, learn how to budget, gain communication skills which includes interview and study techniques.  

The ‘Numeracy’ component teaches techniques to gain the confidence and skills to solve a range of basic equations and ‘math’ problems.  You will also learn how to budget your finances.

In ‘Literacy’ you will gain skills to fill in forms, write correspondence and communicate ideas.  You will also learn reading and writing techniques to prepare you for further study, career exploration and real life experiences.  

The ‘Communication Skills’ component offers papers based around listening skills, problem solving, interview techniques and assertive behaviour.  The class also participates in a ‘team project event’.

‘Skills for the Future’ focuses on exploring career opportunities, producing a curriculum vitae and interview techniques. Gaining computer skills is also covered in this component.

The Certificate in Tertiary Study Skills, Level 1, is suitable for people who have no formal qualifications and who need to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. It is designed for those who want to enrol in further tertiary study.

Application checklist
It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)
  • Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)
  • Check if you're eligible for additional support or a scholarship. If you're 19 years or younger, you may be eligible to enrol in one of our free Youth Transition programmes.

Note that you will need to provide any verified documents in person, via post or email.
