Starting with where you’re at in life, UCOL will support you to go forward. This course will give you the confidence, knowledge, attributes and skills to prepare you for further learning, including achieving NCEA Level 1, and/or gain your literacy and numeracy credits.

Work together with your lecturer to come up with a project that is tailored to suit your personal interests.

The New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 is suitable for people who have no formal qualifications and who need to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. It is designed for those seeking to achieve NCEA Level 1 and/or gain literacy and numeracy credits.

The New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 supersedes and takes the best from the following programmes of study, which are no longer offered:
  • Tertiary Study Skills Level 1
  • Certificate in Fashion and Beauty

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Trading as Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is accredited to teach it.
