Originally wanting to study Law, Chris learnt that following his passion was the best decision he could have made after graduating with the Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging.
Chris Percy had always had a passion for illustrating and music yet he almost began his career by enrolling in law; it was his parents who finally convinced him to follow his passion.
“My parents talked me out of this as my only motivation was money, and I definitely would not have passed.”
Wanting initially to study photography, the 21 year old from Napier chose UCOL for the degree but later decided to shift his focus within this degree to illustration and graphic design.
“The work environment at UCOL is more intimate, with lecturers helping students more directly. The Lecturers teaching the
Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging (now
Bachelor of Creative Media) courses are all professional and industry experienced.”
Chris say’s seeing the final product of work that he had slaved over for months made studying all worthwhile. He even managed to obtain employment as the Graphic Designer for Screenprint Services within a week on finishing, and he also continues to work for several musicians producing quality merchandise and promotional material in his spare time.
Moving forward Chris plans on sharpening his graphic design and illustration skills and learning more about the art of screen printing. He attributes a lot of his success to the lecturers who encouraged him to grow as an artist by encouraging students to work with clients and be extremely ambitious with their creations.
“Looking back, it is easy to see a massive leap in my skills as an illustrator and graphic designer. This was definitely helped by the efforts of UCOL staff who would consistently go out of their way to nurture the skills of all the students studying.”
