Wanting to add another string to her bow after over 30 years of Nursing, Debi Potten was on the hunt for a different challenge.
Debi’s thirst for a new adventure led her to enrol in UCOL’s National Certificate in Beauty Services (Cosmetology) programme in Palmerston North.
Having always been interested in the beauty industry, Debi says she wanted to help people to feel good about themselves. “I’ve always loved beauty treatments, make-up and nails after having a few treatments myself over the years.”
Debi feels lucky to have found a great beauty programme with supportive lecturers so close to where she lives in Feilding.
“UCOL support staff and my wonderful lecturers helped me the entire way. Even at times when I felt overwhelmed they were all very encouraging and motivating me through-out the programme.”
Learning practical skills and gaining theoretical knowledge in a range of services, Debi enjoyed the in-depth overview of the beauty industry the programme provided.
She enjoyed the programme so much that after she graduated she was inspired to continue her studies with UCOL’s National Certificate in Beauty (Nail Technology) programme.
“I want to be knowledgeable in a range of beauty services and UCOL’s beauty programmes allow me to do that,” she says.
“I would like to eventually achieve a Diploma in Beauty Therapy to combine my new beauty knowledge with nursing to do beauty procedures in clinics.”
In the future Debi also sees herself setting up her own home salon so she can pursue what she loves and work around family commitments.
“My eldest daughter is in the UK embarking on her own beauty training so perhaps in the future we may be able to set up a family business!”
