National Certificate in Farming Skills (Work Ready) Graduate on farm.

While working through an agricultural degree Michelle Childs decided she wanted more practical farming skills.

After researching numerous courses Michelle chose to enrol in a National Certificate in Farming Skills (Work Ready) with UCOL in Palmerston North.

Michelle says during her time at UCOL she gained a good mix of essential farming knowledge and was encouraged by her tutors to continue her studies to develop her practical farming skills. “My tutors worked with me to balance my UCOL and other study commitments,” she says.

As part of the programme Michelle got to roll up her sleeves and experience what it would be like to really work on a Manawatū dairy farm.

Excelling in on-farm experience, Michelle’s hard work was recognised and she gained full time employment as a dairy farm assistant in Kimbolton.

Michelle believes the Farming Skills programme at UCOL provided her the core skills and local connections needed for a career in agriculture. “I gained connections in the industry and most importantly my tutors continue to support me in my career,” she says.

Graduating in 2016, Michelle is now putting her practical skills to use working at an Equine and Farm Vet clinic in Palmerston North.

Michelle’s goal of owning her own farm is looking achievable as she continues to develop her farming skills and make local industry connections. “Studying Farming Skills at UCOL has given me the confidence to move through the industry ranks and into the dream of farm ownership.”
