Rowan Dicks has been teaching Furniture Design at UCOL for several years, coming from industry as a hard-working cabinet-maker.

For Rowan, joining the UCOL teaching staff was somewhat of a homecoming. He had graduated five years earlier with a Diploma in Furniture Design and Making and had gone on to do his apprenticeship with local furniture and joinery manufacturer Avant Garde Interiors.

Over four years he worked his way up to foreman at Avant Garde. After a short stint in Wellington however, he was enticed back to Palmerston North.

"I had continued to compete in the annual Kawerau Woodskills competitions after I left UCOL so I would often meet up with the Lecturers there," says Rowan.

After being approached to teach at UCOL, Rowan revelled in his immediate challenge of shaping the new Level 1 Trades Skills Certificate. He also completed a Certificate in Adult Teaching Advanced (CATA).

"Doing the CATA course was really helpful as it made me aware of strategies, resources – the tools if you like, to improve the quality of my teaching."

Rowan has established his own brand, RD Furniture, and regularly showcases his eye-catching creations at contemporary arts festivals and exhibitions.

"It's good to continue to get my work out there," he says.
