Stay Well to Stay Strong Microcredential will teach you how to raise awareness about the risk of type 2 diabetes and work with members of your community to identify and reduce diabetes risks.

This programme runs for 20 weeks, including 2 holiday weeks.

Per week, your learning will include approximately: 

Class Time
5 hours
Lectures, tutorials and/or online recordings. 
    
Study Time
2 hours
Self-directed learning hours.


On completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Act as a health literacy coach in the area of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
  • Work respectfully with community members to identify and reduce diabetes risks.

This programme also aims to develop the literacy skills relevant for further study in:

  • Cutting Your Diabetes Risk in Half Microcredential (Level 4)
  • NZ Certificates or Diplomas in Community/Health/Wellbeing (Levels 3-6)
    OR
  • Bachelor degrees in Community/Health/Wellbeing (Level 7)

This programme consists of 15 credits.

Community Engagement: “Stay Well To Stay Strong” with prediabetes and or Type 2 Diabetes (15 credits)

The learning outcomes:

  • Identify the factors that positively and negatively affect diabetes risk within New Zealand Aotearoa communities
  • Explain the progression of health complications from diabetes
  • Identify the key points of a diabetes consultation with a medical professional.

All learners have access to the full range of the UCOL on-site facilities such as the library, learning hubs, study areas, and computer labs.

NCEA Level 1 (including Literacy 10 credits and Numeracy 10 Credits at Level 1)
OR
Equivalent academic achievement
OR
On a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Executive Dean

All applicants are required to:

  • Declare any previous criminal convictions before admission is confirmed. Convictions of any offence may not necessarily exclude applicants from enrolment; the decision is at the discretion of the Academic Leader; and
  • authorise UCOL to obtain a background check from the New Zealand Police Licensing and Vetting Agency; and
    complete a health declaration form; and
  • provide certified copies of all relevant documentation.

Additionally, the minimum entry requirement for international students is an IELTS General or Academic score of five or above (or equivalent TOEFL score of no lower than five).

IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (ie combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).  

In addition to this, international applicants under the age of 20 must have NCEA equivalency (refer to guide held by Business Development International).

All students are encouraged to access support and guidance to improve study, research and academic skills.

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning, a business division of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
