No less than six of UCOL’s exceptional learners and educators were celebrated at an Adult Learners’ Week Awards function at UCOL’s Masterton campus recently.
Organised locally by REAP Wairarapa, Adult Learners’ Week activities are aimed at acknowledging the efforts, achievements and contributions of adult learners, educators and providers, while raising awareness of the rich variety of learning opportunities for adults.
New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) student Tabitha Ayre was one of three UCOL students who were presented with Exceptional Adult Learner awards.
The 27 year old mum of two pre-schoolers has returned to study and is thriving on the challenges of learning new skills. “I have always had an interest in hair, so I’m keen to give it a real go.”
Two of her fellow hairdressing students Greer James and Justine Cooke, also received Exceptional Adult Learner awards, presented by Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson.
All three filled the criteria as students who, ‘have an enthusiastic and infectious determination to learn, and willingly share new skills, knowledge and abilities with others’.
By ensuring a collaborative, cooperative, quality learning environment and responding to adult learners’ needs with creativity and innovation, UCOL Lecturers Trish Morison (Nurse Education) and Nicola Flanagan (Hairdressing) and
Te Atakura Coach Riki Anderson, all received Exceptional Adult Educator awards.
The category recognises ‘exceptional commitment to excellence and the advancement of their learners.’
