Culinary delights were on offer the recent Horowhenua Taste Trail, this event was designed to introduce culinary competition for the community.

This successful event was attended by many youth from Waiopehu College.

One of the year 13 students in attendance was Maya Machuca, Maya is a keen foody and successfully won the omelette making competition “I found the competition a little difficult because we weren’t in a kitchen but you got used to it quick. I had never cooked an omelette before so I was a little scared but we had a little bit of practice before the competition which made it less stressful.”

Entering was fun, but it is more than that with Maya “My favourite subject at school has to be catering. My family love cooking and I grew up around it all and I was always very interested in it so when I got to college I took the food classes and from there my love for cooking has grown”.

Her teacher Sarah Ryan from Waiopehu was also at the event and delighted with Maya’s win “Maya is a great student who thoroughly deserved to win this.  Her abilities in the kitchen are fantastic and she shows a real flare for creating things from nothing.  It is really pleasing to see Maya enter into further study in a field she is really passionate about.”

2018 will see Maya as a student at UCOL taking her passion further and gaining the skills she will need to have a successful career in industry “I choose UCOL because we went to the open day there and I just loved it. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly.”

UCOL is committed to offering pathways to youth and look forward to welcoming Maya next year. For other aspiring chefs and bakers get cooking and experimenting now as August 2018 will see the next Secondary Schools Competitions happen on three of our campuses:
