UCOL raised $539.50 to help New Zealand kids access free mental-health counselling, as part of the Gumboot Friday appeal.

Students and staff across UCOL’s campuses were encouraged to wear gumboots and make a donation on April 5, with all proceeds going to I Am Hope. The money raised will help fund free and timely counselling for young New Zealanders dealing with depression.

Students and staff also took part in gumboot-related activities, like gumboot-throwing and gumboot pong.

Students Adrian Takiari (Whanganui), Megan Carson (Palmerston North), and Ngahuia Terauki (Wairarapa) each won a brand new pair of gumboots thanks to sponsors Hunting & Fishing and Farmlands.

UCOL's Executive Director of Student Success, Dr Nicky Van der Bergh says he was delighted to see so many staff and students get behind the Gumboot Friday cause.

“I was proud to see the UCOL community come together and not only raise money, but also show their support for and solidarity with young New Zealanders dealing with depression. I Am Hope is doing important work by connecting young people with counsellors, so I’m glad that we at UCOL were able to play our part.”

Over $800,000 has been raised nationally as a result of Gumboot Friday.
