Tayla Peters Fear has, in part, her sister to thank for her new career in Beauty Therapy.

“My sister Aleisha studied at UCOL in Palmerston North and said how awesome it was,” says Tayla.

With a particular interest in massage, 18-year-old Tayla followed her sister’s advice and soon enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy at the Horowhenua campus.

“UCOL were so supportive during the COVID-19 lockdown levels and working from home. The Zoom chats we had really helped with connecting to the outside world,” says Tayla.

When the Alert Levels finally allowed her to be on campus, Tayla enjoyed learning about many different kinds of beauty treatments and refining her skills. “It was a really good team environment,” she says.

Tayla says studying at UCOL prepared her well for her future in the industry, and she was delighted to be offered a job as a beauty therapist at Adore Hair and Beauty in Feilding.

“Everything I have learnt at UCOL, I am now using in a real salon. Working here has put my learning into context and helped me retain everything,” she says “It’s amazing to connect with the members of the Adore team and to learn new treatments.”
One of the favourite parts of her job is meeting and engaging with clients. “Good rapport is really important when you work so closely with people.”

Tayla will graduate with a New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy at the Horowhenua ceremony in March 2021.

She admits there is so much more to learn and is keen to study for a New Zealand Diploma in Beauty Therapy in the future. “I’d love to specialise in Massage Therapy.”
