Graduate Diploma in Accounting Graduate

Wilson George made such a great impression while doing an accounting internship through UCOL that was offered a full-time job.

Wilson completed a Master of Business Administration specialising in Finance and Accounting at SRM University in Chennai, India. Over the next four and a half years he rose through the ranks at financial services provider ICICI Securities to become a Branch Manager. However accounting was his real passion, and it was time to follow it.

“ICICI Securities gave me good career growth, but the job was more related to sales. Accounting was my favourite subject and preferred profession, so I thought I’d come back to that and study an accounting programme to recollect my knowledge.”

Wilson wanted to experience studying in a different country. He liked the idea of living in New Zealand, and chose UCOL’s Graduate Diploma in Accounting largely because it includes an internship.

“I thought that this would be a great opportunity for me because I could get some industry experience in New Zealand.”

Wilson says UCOL’s lecturers were incredibly supportive and made him feel at ease about English not being his first language.

“The lecturers are awesome. It can be a struggle for international students who don’t speak English as their first language, and aren’t used to writing assignments like students do here. But, the lecturers realise this and are always available to help. They are caring and positive.”

As part of his studies, Wilson completed an internship with KSG Corporation, a Palmerston North business made up of KSG Cleaning, Everclear Windows, and KSG HR. Over the course of the internship, Wilson completed budgets for the upcoming year, prepared financial statements, and took on payroll responsibilities.

Wilson enjoyed how he was able to apply his classroom learnings about management accounting, financial accounting, and New Zealand taxation in an industry environment.

“Overall, the accounting curriculum at UCOL perfectly matches what you would do in an accounting job. I was able to implement all of the theoretical knowledge I learnt in class once I was in the industry.”

Wilson did such a good job at KSG Corporation that he was given part-time employment, which then became a full-time role once he finished his studies.

Wilson is now KSP Corporation’s Finance and Admin Director and is proud to have gained New Zealand residency.
