Insurance Information

It is a compulsory requirement of the New Zealand Government for all international students to have travel, medical and personal belongings insurance to cover their duration of travel to and from New Zealand, as well as while studying in New Zealand.  We are unable to enrol you into a UCOL programme unless you have appropriate insurance.

The insurance must meet the requirements of the code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.  A copy of the code can be found on the following website http://www.minedu.govt.nz.

Start of cover

The policy should:

·         Commence the minute you leave home for the airport on your way to New Zealand

·         Apply while in transit

·         Apply while in New Zealand

·         Cover any trips to other countries during your period of study

·         Cover any holidays back to your home country during your period of study

Insurance Approval

UCOL’s International Office must obtain an original copy of your medical and travel insurance policy before you can be enrolled.  The policy or Certificate of Currency must be in English, or translated into English, and must be shown to the UCOL International Office staff.  If you do not arrive with current medical and travel insurance that meets all requirements, you must obtain an approved policy before your enrolment can be completed.  This regulation aims to protect you during your study in New Zealand.

In our experience, most medical and travel insurance policies that have been arranged through overseas companies do not meet the requirements for studying in New Zealand.

Below are details of one insurance company with a policy that does meet the requirements of the Code of practice for pastoral care.

‘Unicare’ – this company has one policy.  The approximate cost is $540.00 (NZ Student Plan).  This will cover you from departure from your home country to the expiry date of your student visa.

Here is the link to the website for more information regarding prices and cover they provide:

You, or your agent do have the option of organising your own medical insurance, however if you wish, UCOL can arrange medical insurance on your behalf with Unicare.

We require that payment be made prior to you leaving your home country to:

Bank of Australia New Zealand (ANZ), Palmerston North branch

Credit for UCOL – Account Number 01 07450039831 004 (SWIFT Code: ANZBNZ22)

It would not be necessary for you to fill out an application form as we are master policy holders, however if you have any pre-existing conditions, there is a form that must be completed.  To assist with prompt processing of the payment we would require that the following personal information be supplied with the payment:

·         Family Name

·         First Name

·         Application ID Number

·         Details of what payment is for (ie insurance)

It would also be helpful if you could advise via email as soon as the transfer has been made.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the International Office at Internationalstudent@ucol.ac.nz
