Three Palmerston North UCOL Chef Training and Hospitality students have won one of New Zealand's most prestigious culinary competitions, Toque d’Or.

Kate Bryant and Keziah O’Conner of UCOL’s New Zealand Certificate in Cookery Level 4 teamed up with Summer Dennison of the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service Level 4 to take out the supreme award in the competition run during the NZ Chefs National Salon last month. Kate and Keziah won gold for their work in the kitchen, while Summer was awarded a silver for her front of house skills.

UCOL Baking student Zachariah Meads was also successful at the event in individual competitions, winning Gold and Top of Class with his dessert entry and Silver in the salmon dish.

UCOL Executive Dean Engineering and Applied Technologies, Dr Nicky Van der Bergh, says the results are fantastic. “Our congratulations go to the great team of students and also to all staff involved. For Team Manager Mark Smith, and Front of House Trainer Niels Huibers, the training is over and above the lecturers’ normal teaching load, and the experience is so valuable to the students involved.”

The four students also took home awards from the regional Hawkes Bay and Taranaki culinary competitions earlier this year.
