Overview
In this programme you will learn about skin care services and cosmetics, product consulting, how to understand symptoms of skin conditions, delivering services to industry standards, sales and promotions, professional communications, and health, safety, and hygiene compliance.

Course Information
This programme comprises 60 credits.
Professional Practice (15 Credits)
To equip learners with the fundamental skills and knowledge required of a makeup and skin care technician.
On successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
Describe and apply health, safety and hygiene practices and procedures to ensure both personal and professional safety in a salon
Describe and demonstrate the use and maintenance of tools and equipment used in makeup and skin care
Describe facial features, shapes and underlying skin tones and how this relates to makeup colour and design theory
Describe makeup products and different makeup styles
Communicate and converse effectively in a salon environment
Unit Standard 28843 (Level 3) (2 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of personal health and hygiene, and self-styling, for working in a salon.
Unit Standard 28845 (Level 3) (3 Credits)
Demonstrate safe and professional practice in the salon environment.
Unit Standard 28946 (Level 3) (4 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of tools, equipment and safe operating procedures used in make-up and skin care services.
Unit Standard 27644 (Level 3) (4 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of make-up and design theory.
Unit Standard 21938 (Level 2) (3 Credits)
Converse and interact with clients and operators in a salon environment.
Skin Care Services (15 Credits)
To equip with learners with required knowledge of the structure and functions of the face and of facial skin types and conditions; and to enable learners to perform skin care services in preparation for makeup application.
On successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
Describe and explain the structure and functions of the skin on the face, facial skin types and conditions
Identify the principle muscles and bones of the face, head, neck and décolleté
Conduct a skin consultation to determine skin type and condition
Perform a skincare service in preparation for makeup application
Unit Standard 27645 (Level 3) (6 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and functions of the face, and of facial skin types and conditions.
Unit Standard 27646 (Level 3) (10 Credits)
Perform skincare services for the face in preparation for make-up application.
Makeup Services (10 Credits)
To enable learners to perform a range of makeup services.
On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Conduct a client consultation to determine makeup selection
Perform makeup services
Unit Standard 27647 (Level 3) (10 Credits)
Perform make-up services.
Cosmetic Counter Sales and Services (20 Credits)
To enable learners to provide advice on the selection and use of cosmetics and toiletries and assist with sales and promotional activities.
On successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
Consult with clients to select and recommend skin care, nail care and makeup products to meet client needs
Describe and explain retail hair products, fragrances and men’s and women’s toiletries in terms of meeting customer requirements
Describe and explain basic business, financial and sales processes relevant to the beauty service industry
Apply sales and customer service techniques and processes in a salon environment
Assist with merchandising and makeup and skin care events
Unit Standard 14139 (Level 3) (8 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of, select, and recommend cosmetics and toiletries.
Unit Standard 25437 (Level 3) (5 Credits)
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of money matters and personal responsibility in the salon environment.
Unit Standard 27648 (Level 3) (7 Credits)
Demonstrate knowledge of promotional activities within a make-up and skin care workplace.
Learning Facilities
Fully equipped beauty salons, classrooms and PC labs.
Domestic Entry Requirements
For year 12 - 13 secondary school learners (NZ Citizens, permanent residents or learners with an applicable visa allowing them to be enrolled in a secondary school), aged 16 years or over.
Applications are to be received from participating schools.
