Fees and loans

Understanding study fees at UCOL

If you're a domestic student enrolling in a programme that’s longer than 12 months (one year), the fee shown on the qualification page covers only your first year of study, unless we’ve clearly stated otherwise.

Fees for your second year and beyond depend on the courses you choose, and they may be slightly higher.

Akonga with unpaid fees who are preparing to graduate must note that while your award will be confirmed, your graduation certificate and academic record will be withheld until outstanding fees have been paid.

Additional costs for your study at UCOL

Some programmes may have extra costs — like textbooks, stationery, or uniforms — that aren’t included in your general tuition fees.

Where possible, these costs are listed in the Advice and Guidance section on each programme page.

If you’re unsure about how much these costs are or when they’ll come up, our friendly Info Centre team is here to help. Just give us a call on 0800 GO UCOL.

International student fees

The amounts shown for international students in the programme listings are in New Zealand dollars and are indicative only. The international tuition fee listed on programme pages include GST and the SSL.

Student Services Levy (SSL)

Included in our tuition fees is a Student Services Levy or SSL. This contributes to funding a range of services that UCOL provides to students. These services are primarily advocacy, financial advice, counselling, and healthcare, but can also include providing childcare services, supporting clubs and societies, employment information, and sports, recreational, and cultural activities. UCOL consults with its student body each year on the amount in preparation for the year ahead.

Student loans

Many ākonga are eligible for a student loan and/or living allowances from StudyLink. This funding can cover compulsory tuition fees, course-related costs, and living expenses. StudyLink and a member of UCOL’s student finance team are available for a chat every Tuesday 11am-1pm in the Atrium on our Manawatū campus, pop by to see them.

Fees Free government initiative

If you’re starting tertiary study or work-based learning for the first time you may be able to get Fees Free after you complete your first eligible qualification or programme.

Fees Free covers the cost of your fees for the final year of study, up to $12,000.

When you enrol, you will need to pay your fees. To help you cover this cost, you may wish to apply for a student loan. Find out more at Student loan – StudyLink.

For more information on the eligibility requirements and when it is best to apply for Fees Free, visit Fees Free – Inland Revenue.
