Shontae Sharp
Facilities Management Office Administrator
Being snapped up by UCOL’s Facilities Management team three weeks before her programme finished, Shontae Sharp’s transition from study to employment couldn’t have gone smoother.
When a fitting role that aligned with Shontae’s career goals arose at UCOL during the final weeks of her New Zealand Certificate in Business (Administration and Technology) Level 4 programme this year, she says she jumped at the chance to apply.
“I really enjoyed studying at UCOL Manawatū, so when the Facilities Management Office Administrator role became available, I really wanted the job!
“My lecturers were so supportive throughout my studies and about me applying for the position, so when I got the job, it was an amazing feeling. Knowing I had gained employment at a place I enjoyed being at, and before my programme had even finished, was an incredible outcome.”
After working retail for over 3 years, Shontae found that a career in business administration was going to be the right pathway for her, and when she was ready to investigate study options after a few years working, she says UCOL was the only tertiary institute she considered for a number of reasons.
“In high school, I was pretty nifty with computers, well-organised, and liked talking to people, which I discovered were all qualities that business administrators had, so that’s what I thought I should do and would enjoy.
"I gained great confidence communicating with all types of people working in retail, but it wasn’t until I studied at UCOL that I learnt the professional communication skills needed to work in the industry.
"When I looked into studying at UCOL I loved how easily accessible it was being so close to town, the business administration study blocks were in one area which meant I would be surrounded by like-minded people, and all of the lecturers were so welcoming.”
During her studies, Shontae had some standout topics she loved learning about, which she now puts into practice on a daily basis in her role.
“We learnt all about the Microsoft Office programmes and the various functions they offer – they have so many features I had no idea about before studying! I also enjoyed learning about the customer experience and the connection between the employee and customer, as well as learning about how businesses are run.”
Reflecting on her switch from student to employee, Shontae says she is thriving in her role and has been welcomed into the UCOL whānau with open arms.
“I am really liking my new job! Everyone is so welcoming and supportive of me getting familiar with the role and up to speed with what’s involved. My main jobs are managing the car bookings for kaimahi, paying invoices and raising purchase orders. I also make sure all of our files are up to date.
"A bonus I've found here working at UCOL is being surrounded by many intelligent individuals, so working here you naturally learn something new every day! My career goals are fulfilled right now with this job. I also have to say, I like how close UCOL Manawatū is to so many amazing food options!”
