This programme provides those with prior experience of hairstyling and colouring tasks and basic hair cutting techniques the opportunity to further develop their skills to become a professional hairstylist. 

On successful completion, you’ll have the knowledge, skills, and attributes to provide integrated fashion services as a professional hairstylist capable of operating under broad guidance.

Learn about client consultation, diagnosis, care and advice. Complete cutting, styling, colouring, colour correction, and chemical reformation and learn how to manage multiple integrated client hairdressing services.

Gain safe and professional practice skills working at our training salon, Te Whare Makawe where you can perform fashion services to meet client requirements.

This programme runs for 40 weeks, including 6 holiday weeks.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Provide client consultation, diagnosis, care and advice to establish a plan for future hair treatment services and home haircare as a professional hairstylist.
  • Apply hairdressing theory and practice to safely and professionally complete a broad range of integrated, current fashion services to meet client requirements, including cutting, styling, colouring, colour correction, and chemical reformation.
  • Manage multiple integrated client hairdressing services in a timely manner to support a salon's profitability.


This programme consists of 120 credits.

Professional Stylist Attributes (10 Credits) 
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to understand the intersection between personal and professional self, and communicate effectively in the hairdressing industry. 

Sculpture (20 Credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform foundation scissor cuts, razor and clipper services on a diverse range of clients.

The Art of Advanced Hair Design (15 Credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform advanced hair design using wet and dry styling.

Reformeration Designs (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform reformation services on a variety of hair types.

Advanced Colour Design (20 Credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to make informed decisions and carry out advanced colour and decolouring services.

Fashion Colour and Scultpure (15 Credits) 
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform a range of fashion colouring and cutting.

Advanced Client Journey (15 Credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to work in a professional hairdressing context.

Advanced Grand Finale (10 Credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to synthesise learning to present avant-garde styles to a professional hairdressing standard.


Fully equipped hairdressing and beauty salon, classrooms and computer labs.

Applicants must hold one of the following: 

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3); 

Or

an equivalent qualification.

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international learner applicants.

English language proficiency
International learner applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS Academic or General score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).


New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning, a business division of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
