Overview

Explore the Elements and Principles of Design while acquiring basic skills in Design, Illustration, and Photography. By the end of this course, you will create an individual zine that will serve as a sample portfolio, based on the skills you have learnt.  If desired, you will have the opportunity to showcase their completed zine(s) at the Palmerston North Zine Fest on 4 July 2026.

This course will also prepare you for a smooth transition into further learning within Creative Industries, providing additional support as needed.

Course Hours

Palmerston North: Thursdays, 9am – 12pm

Whanganui: Fridays, 9am – 12pm

Course Information

Over the course of eight weeks, learners have the opportunity to explore the Elements and Principles of Design, while acquiring basic skills in Design, Illustration, and Photography. By the end of the course, participants will create an individual zine that will serve as a sample portfolio, based on the skills they have learnt, which learners will have the opportunity to showcase at the Palmerston North Zine Fest on 4 July 2026.

This course also prepares learners for a smooth transition into further learning within Creative Industries, providing additional support as needed.

Learning Facilities

Excellent industry-standard learning facilities including an art tutorial room, specialist Mac Design Labs, printmaking facilities, photo printing facilities, photography and lighting studio.

Career Opportunities

This course represents a first taster of the creative sector. It can prepare participants for further study in the Creative Industries. The course also provides introductory skills in creative disciplines like photography, graphic design and illustration.
