Becoming an IT Business Analyst wasn’t a career path that Theresa envisaged during her school years.

“Before my studies, I only had a basic understanding of ICT. When I discovered a demand for technical roles and skills within the workforce, I decided to have a go at the UCOL | Te Pūkenga Certificate for IT for Business (now called the NZ Certificate in IT Essentials). I then realised that I really enjoyed ICT and decided to pursue my studies and enrol in the Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (BICT) degree.”

The practical, hands-on nature of the BICT degree appealed to Theresa, and she found that the degree was challenging but enjoyable, with supportive lecturers to guide her. The skills she learnt were helpful for her internship as a Business Analyst at, what was then the, MidCentral District Health Board. She says, “I have the technical advantage which helps when working with stakeholders on digital projects.” The internship experience helped Theresa to procure a full-time role with, what is now known as, Te Whatu Ora MidCentral after completing her degree.

“I now work for Te Whatu Ora MidCentral as a Digital Business Analyst. Already, I’ve been involved in projects that benefit our hospital from a business, clinical, and patient point of view. Each day I continue to learn from new experiences while connecting and working with a variety of different people – I love it!”
