A series of practical training sessions on Xero accounting software, tailored for small businesses and sole traders, is running for the first time in Whanganui, with hopes that demand will enable it to continue in 2025.
The initiative was spearheaded by Neihana Pari, Kaitoho Pakahi Māori — Māori Business Growth Advisor at Te Mana Atatu, the Māori Business Network based in Whanganui. The course aims to equip network members with the skills needed to manage their finances confidently using Xero.
UCOL Academic Portfolio Manager – Business and Innovation, Jan MacGibbon, said Te Mana Atatu approached UCOL to help deliver the course who contracted local non-profit organisation Money Poppins to deliver it.
"The 'Getting to Know Xero' series consists of four 2-hour evening sessions at The Backhouse. It is being taught by Niki Vernon, the founder of Money Poppins, who has extensive experience helping small businesses manage their finances," explains MacGibbon.
Through her mahi at Money Poppins, Niki Vernon had recognised a significant gap in financial literacy among small businesses and sole traders. When the opportunity arose through Te Mana Atatu, Niki offered her expertise to design and deliver the Xero training programme.
As a long-time user and advocate of Xero, she brings in-depth knowledge of the platform, providing participants with valuable insights on managing their business accounts more effectively.
Ten ākonga from Te Mana Atatu are taking part in the course, which covers topics such as getting started with Xero, setting up an account, and completing basic business transactions within the platform. Participants learn to use Xero's resources and applications to streamline business operations.
Jan MacGibbon says, "the course has proven popular, and we are hopeful that a second course will be run next year if there is enough demand."
