UCOL Whanganui and Ministry of Social Development (MSD) are proud to celebrate the success of nine ākonga, who have completed a pre-employment hospitality short course with a 100% success rate.
UCOL’s Academic Portfolio Manager – Electrical, Hospitality & Foundation, Ian Drew, says it’s great to have agencies like MSD approach UCOL to support our community in such a way. “These job seekers have been able to add a string to their bow of skills, aiding them in finding a role in the workforce.”
“Over seven days including independent study on the weekend, these ākonga have been successful in achieving three NZQA unit standards. These covered being able to practice food safety methods in a food business under supervision, demonstrating knowledge of host responsibility required as a duty manager and of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and its implications for licensed premises, and showing a broad understanding of making espresso coffee on a commercial espresso machine.”
Ministry of Social Development Regional Commissioner Gloria Campbell says the Ministry was pleased to partner with UCOL. The hospitality course is one of three that took place in Taranaki and Whanganui to give ākonga training, skills and a head start in the sector.
“Trainees told us the course boosted their confidence with the mentorship provided by UCOL’s tutors a key to their success. Our MSD staff will continue to work alongside these people to help them on their employment and training journey.”
