UCOL is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian McKelvie as Community Advisor — a new role designed to strengthen regional engagement and support strategic planning.

As Community Advisor, Mr McKelvie will work closely with UCOL. His role will be pivotal in providing independent advice on local needs and opportunities.

“Having a strong local voice in these processes is essential,” said Jasmine Groves. “Ian brings not only deep community roots but also significant governance experience that will help guide UCOL through important decisions. His role is advisory — not operational — but his input will help shape structures and models that best serve our learners, communities, and stakeholders.”

A key focus of the role is to advise on regional skill needs, education delivery options, and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Ian McKelvie’s experience spans local government, Parliament, and the primary sector. He served as Mayor of Manawatū for nine years, followed by 11 years as a Member of Parliament. He has held governance roles with FMG, Dunchurch Enterprises, Pukemarama Farms, and Farmers Mutual Finance, and chaired organisations such as Special Olympics New Zealand and the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand.

“I’m really looking forward to supporting Jasmine and her team as they work toward restoring UCOL’s autonomy,” said Mr McKelvie. “UCOL has been central to our region’s education for over 130 years, and this role is an opportunity to ensure its future direction reflects the needs of our communities.”

Mr McKelvie begins his role this month.
