Following yesterday’s post-cabinet announcement, UCOL is pleased to share that the organisation has been listed as one of 10 polytechnics to return to autonomy with local governance from 1 January 2026.
Jasmine Groves, UCOL’s Operations Lead, says UCOL and its kaimahi (staff) have worked tirelessly to get the business division to a point where it will be a viable and sustainable institute going forward.
“While there are still plenty of unknowns, including a transition out of Te Pūkenga to come, we look forward to returning to being a community polytechnic and supporting the needs of our rohe.”
“As we work through this in the coming months, we will continue to engage and unpack what this means for all our stakeholders.”
Tomorrow will also see the final decisions on our change process getting UCOL future ready. We recognise the impact of both announcements on our affected kaimahi. This internal process has not been in vain, and it is due to this process and the consistent, continued efforts from our kaimahi from a fiscal perspective, which have enabled UCOL to be in this positive situation for the future.
