Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki) (Te Kaupae 5) Immersion

This programme is designed for emergent speakers of te reo Māori with an advanced understanding and ability in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

Through full immersion in te reo Māori, you will develop the ability to communicate independently and express ideas and theories with increasing fluency and flexibility across a range of familiar and some less familiar contexts.

You will further develop your knowledge of te reo Māori, including grammar, syntax, language variation, kīanga, tikanga and the ways te reo is used within te ao Māori. Learning includes opportunities for authentic engagement with te ao Māori and local contexts.

This programme is taught part-time over 40 weeks, including 2 holiday weeks.

Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki), Level 5 is a 60-credit programme designed to develop advanced te reo Māori language skills. Learners develop the ability to communicate independently in te reo Māori and express ideas and theories fluently and flexibly across a range of familiar and less familiar situations. The programme also develops technical knowledge and supports learners to contribute to the ongoing development and use of te reo Māori in personal, community and professional contexts.

The programme comprises four 15 credit courses:

Ngā Whakatakoto o Te Reo Rima – Māori Language Grammar and Syntax: develops increasingly complex language patterns, vocabulary and strategies for understanding and communicating in familiar and unfamiliar contexts, including the use of technology to communicate in te reo Māori.

Ngā Kōrero Whakanikoniko – Māori Language Proverbs and Colloquial Sayings: develops the ability to use kīanga, pūrākau, kīwaha and whakataukī appropriately, with a focus on relationships between people, place and environment.

Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga i Te Ao Hurihuri – Māori Language and Protocol, Tradition and Evolution: develops learners' ability to evaluate traditions, their rationale and how tikanga and practices have changed over time.

Ngā Kōrero Tutaki Tangata, Mihi Whenua – The Language of Interaction and Exchange: develops the ability to interpret language used in gatherings and communicate and conduct oneself appropriately according to different roles and contexts.

The programme is delivered through classroom-based and wānanga-based learning.

Students will be learning in the on-campus Marae, Te Amoranga, and will have access to UCOL facilities including the library, Learning Hubs, study areas and computer labs.

Applicants must have one of the following:

• Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 3) or equivalent, OR

• NCEA Level 3 Te Reo Māori, AND

• Aromatawai ā-waha, kanohi ki te kanohi (oral, face-to-face assessment) with the programme lecturer.

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning is accredited to teach it.

This qualification is intended for people who want to contribute to the development of te reo Māori and use te reo as a means of communication at home or in the workplace. Graduates develop the language skills and understanding to communicate independently, express ideas and theories, and use te reo Māori appropriately across a range of familiar and less familiar contexts.

Learning is grounded in authentic te ao Māori contexts and includes opportunities to engage with marae, local histories, tikanga, pūrākau, whaikōrero, karanga and local practices. Wānanga-based delivery provides opportunities for authentic engagement with te ao Māori and supports learners to apply their language skills in real-world contexts.

This programme is intended for ākonga who have an advanced understanding and ability in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and are ready to learn in a full te reo Māori immersion (rumaki) environment.

The programme is designed for emergent speakers who want to further develop their ability to communicate independently in te reo Māori, express ideas and theories with increasing fluency and flexibility, and use te reo Māori across a range of familiar and less familiar contexts.

Students can access study material and resources using computers available on all UCOL campuses outside of scheduled classes. However, being able to study when away from the campus is important for your success. Therefore, it is recommended that students have their own internet-capable devices to complete their studies.
