The challenges Leana Malcolm has overcome, as a young mum of two, to find success in her studies are something she’s very humble about.

Born and bred in Carterton, Leana (Ngāti Kahungunu) has a close whānau who have been a wonderful support system for her.

“I’m really close with my sister who is two years older than me, my parents are still together and my younger brother is around too, although he’s six years younger,” she says.

“Although I was really into sports and health at school and was never the girl who put on a whole face for school, beauty has always been on the cards for me.”

“At the early age of seven, my aunties would pay me to pamper them, from then on I knew I loved it.”

“By the end of high school, I thought I’d give nursing a go. However, I got pregnant straight out of school so delayed studying.”

“10 months later I was pregnant with my second child but decided to give nursing a go anyway. Let’s just say it wasn’t for me,” she laughs.

Taking the rest of the year to focus on being a mum, Leana returned to UCOL the following year to begin her New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4) which she will be graduating with in March.

“I’m so pleased I decided to give it a go, I’ve absolutely loved everything about it!” Leana says.

“My lecturer was fantastic; we had a bigger class, but she really got to know the way each of us liked to learn best. We were all able to lean on her for support and guidance which was great.”

“I didn’t rely much on our Te Mana Tauira team here, but it was really nice knowing they were there and could help if I needed them.”

Her favourite part of the programme? “Oooh that’s a hard one, but I think probably eyebrows – the tinting, the shaping... it’s just so satisfying seeing the results and how much they can transform a face.”

At this point she’s beaming, the joy of her studies shining bright.

When asked how she balanced two very young tamariki with studying, her organising abilities take centre stage.

“Well, I have them in full time care which has made it a lot easier. So, Monday to Wednesday I’m at UCOL and then I use Thursday and Friday for self-directed study. This means I get to keep my weekends clear for them.”

“My family have been so helpful, Mum picks them up from day care three times a week, and my sister has kids of her own that are close in age to mine, which is a big help keeping them entertained.”

Leana begins her second year at UCOL next week, studying towards the New Zealand Diploma in Beauty Therapy. She beams, “I’m so excited to start back! This year will be great, I can’t wait to learn advanced beauty skills.”

After she’s completed her studies, what’s next? “I’m not too sure I keep flip-flopping. For now, I’m thinking I’ll get a year or two of experience here in New Zealand, but after that maybe a move to Australia. Who knows, that might change,” she says.

Finally, her advice to anyone thinking about studying beauty? “Definitely do it! Give it a go! I’m so glad I made that choice. It’s been both fun and interesting and I’ve really enjoyed both the practical and theory side of learning. I’ve already influenced some friends to take the jump as well!” she laughs.
