From Nepal to New Zealand: Risabh Bastola’s Journey in Science and Self-Discovery.
Leaving the familiar streets of a small city in eastern Nepal, Risabh Bastola embarked on a journey to New Zealand to pursue his passion for science. With his brother already studying at UCOL and encouraging him to follow suit, Risabh saw an opportunity to broaden his horizons.
Initially, Risabh had pursued a career in nursing or as a health assistant in Nepal. However, the promise of new experiences and a specialised education drew him to New Zealand, where he enrolled in the Diploma in Applied Science in 2023. Today, he’s advancing his studies in the
Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Science) (Level 7) programme.
The transition to life in New Zealand came with its challenges. Shortly after arriving, Risabh contracted an infection, leaving him without a voice and needing to discover medical assistance for the first time since arriving in the country.
Cultural differences and the language barrier tested Risabh’s resilience. In addition to adjusting to the colloquial English spoken in New Zealand, Risabh felt that in cold weather, the coldness seemed to seep into his bones—something he had never experienced back home.
Nevertheless, Risabh found his footing. He’s made many friends and feels well-supported by UCOL. “There was a student who needed help with getting set up for study, and UCOL helped him get settled,” he says, reflecting on how the community rallied around him and others.
Balancing work and study is no easy feat. At work, Risabh was offered more responsibilities as a shift manager but chose to focus on his education. His dreams are clear: to work for organisations like Fonterra or AgResearch in laboratory science, contributing to pathogen detection and other critical areas. Though finding work in his chosen field may be challenging, Risabh is not one to back down. He has a backup plan to return to nursing if necessary, and his partner, a nurse herself, shares his vision of building a life together in New Zealand.
Through building understanding during his own move to New Zealand, Risabh has come full circle, and he is now helping new students from Nepal adjust to their new surroundings. He answers the same questions he once had, paying forward the kindness and support he received.
Reflecting on his journey, Risabh shares a piece of advice for others and his younger self: “Always have a backup plan.”
