Not only has she achieved her goal of completing the
UCOL New Zealand Diploma in Business (majoring in Accounting), but her hard work and dedication have also been recognised by Chartered Accounts Australia and New Zealand, earning their UCOL Top Prize Student Award.
Wendy finished her final paper in Semester Two last year, and although she didn't plan to make the
UCOL Whanganui Graduation Ceremony in April this year, she's so glad she was encouraged to by those around her.
"It was a last minute decision to make it, and when my kids decided to come too it made it that much more special."
"It was fabulous - a really moving experience. I had tears in my eyes seeing the students up on stage being recognised for their efforts, listening to the speeches and watching the kapa haka performances. I felt really proud wearing the gown and taking part in the post-ceremony parade."
Wendy says it was a complete surprise when her name was called out as the winner of the award.
"My aim was always to get an A+ throughout my studies, so I was overcome when my name was called out, being recognised for the work I had put in."
Having her children there to see her graduate and received the top prize was the icing on the cake.
"I wanted to show my kids that learning doesn't stop when you finish school. It's never too late to start studying and gaining skills, even when you already have a busy work life."
"The lovely certificate I was presented with is displayed in my home office, and the prize money was very well received."
In 2021, UCOL teamed up with the Manawatū, Whanganui, and Wairarapa Chambers of Commerce to offer free qualifications with the goal of improving the capabilities of local businesses. Wendy took this opportunity to return to UCOL Whanganui to complete her study towards a Diploma in Business in 2004.
Reflecting on how well aligned Wendy's study was with her work at the time, and running her family business, she says "Being able to put into practise what I was learning into my work as Financial Administration Lead for Plumber Dan and running our family water filtration business was incredibly helpful".
Wendy says she's a real advocate of learning in the classroom, so UCOL's class schedule enabled her to fulfil her dream of completing her studies face to face while continuing to work.
"I was fortunate the two classes I needed to attend were combined in one day, so I only had to have one morning off work each week."
"Although it was helpful having the option to study online if needed, I really enjoyed being in the classroom around the diversity in ages and ethnicities, and hearing everyone's different perspectives and ideas."
Business Whanganui - Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Helen Garner, says the joint award scheme is a powerful example of partnership in action, with collaboration helping to strengthen the business community, and Wendy's success highlights the value of that approach.
"We recognise the dedication it takes to pursue study while working, and especially to achieve such an award."
"Many business owners consider juggling study and work to be too difficult, but Wendy has shown that it's possible."
Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand's Careers Engagement Manager, Nicola Lancaster, says they are very much in support of sponsoring the award.
"As well as being a fantastic way to celebrate top achieving accounting students, it also helps to encourage people to study accountancy and business. It helps promote the epic opportunities a career in accounting can provide."
Wendy's advice for returning students or those with already busy lives who would love to increase their skills is to go for it.
"UCOL offers lots of support, so don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't ever stop learning!"
