The UCOL Te Pūkenga Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 4), New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Bilingual) ( Level 4) programme is designed to extend your knowledge of te reo to an advanced intermediate-level, including regional language variances. You'll develop a shared appreciation for and contribute to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere and kia Māori.

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to communicate in te reo with fluency and increasing flexibility in everyday whānau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts; and in broader aspects of te ao Māori.

This programme runs for 38 weeks, including 4 holiday weeks..

Successful graduates of Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 4), New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Bilingual) ( Level 4) programme can further specialise in Te Reo with Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki) Te Kaupae 5 New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Immersion) (Level 5).

Extending your Te Reo skills will help you understand and appreciate the significance of Te Reo in your workplace. The ability to listen, speak, and write Te Reo is a valuable skill that many employers seek and could open various employment opportunities in the public and private sectors.

 Course Information

This programme consists of 60 credits. 

Te Kukunetanga - Whakarāpopoto Me Te Whakaatu Pārongo Summarising and Presenting Information (15 Credits)

Ākonga will understand advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures to summarise and present familiar information.

Te Kukunetanga - Te Arotake Me Te Whakautu Huatau Evaluating and Responding to Ideas (15 Credits)
Ākonga will gain the ability to evaluate and respond to ideas as well as account for and sustain a point of view in advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori for familiar and some unfamiliar iwi contexts.

Te Kukunetanga - Reo Mō Ngā Whāinga Ā Ringa Te Reo Māori for Practical Purposes (15 Credits)
Ākonga will learn advanced intermediate level te reo Māori for practical purposes, on familiar and unfamiliar topics in workplace or academic contexts.

Te Kukunetanga - Te Kōtui Me Te Kukunetanga – Te Kōtui Me Te Arotake Tohenga Synthesising and Evaluating Arguments (15 Credits)
Ākonga will gain the ability to synthesise and evaluate in advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori in specified contexts and some unfamiliar settings.

 Learning Facilities

All ākonga have access to the full range of the UCOL Te Pūkenga on-site facilities such as the library, Learning Hubs, study areas and computer labs.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

Te Reo Rangatira at NCEA Level 2,

OR

Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 3) or equivalent,

OR

Aromatawai ā-waha, kanohi ki te kanohi with programme lecturer and/or Programme Leader.

English language proficiency
If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.5 with no band score less than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).

 International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international learner applicants.

English language proficiency
International learner applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).

Under 20 years of age
In addition to this, international applicants under 20 years of age must have NCEA equivalency.

 Advice & Guidance

This programme is intended for ākonga who have an intermediate level of understanding and ability in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

Recognition of prior learning
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course have already been met. Applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the UCOL Te Pūkenga Academic Statute and other relevant policies and procedures.

Application checklist
It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)
  • Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)
  • Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme
  • Check if you're eligible for additional support or a scholarship. If you're 19 years or younger, you may be eligible to enrol in one of our free Youth Transition programmes.

Note that you will need to provide any verified documents in person, via post or email (not via the online application form).

 Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning Limited, a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
