UCOL values the growth and success of its academic staff which is demonstrated by the following initiatives:
- 10 days of agreed professional development leave per year
- A regular series of professional development workshops on a variety of professional practice topics
- Annual Staff Symposium organized by UCOL for all staff
A Connected Workplace
There is a strong connection between staff, and staff and senior management at UCOL with monthly discussions on each campus led by Chief Executive Dr Amanda Lynn, and an annual staff welcome to set the scene for the year.
Whilst UCOL prefers that teaching staff hold an adult teaching qualification, we understand that this is not always possible. Newly appointed academic staff who do not hold such a qualification will be enrolled in a formal programme of study to complete UCOL’s preferred tertiary teaching qualification,
New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching and/or the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy & Numeracy Education (Vocational/Workplace).
We also have a new employee orientation programme designed for our staff who are new to UCOL, so that they get started at UCOL in the best possible way.
General staff attend for half a day and take part in a pōwhiri, a session about Te Atakura, UCOL structure, and support systems UCOL has for students.
Teaching staff attend for a whole day and participate in same programme as general staff and also learn about teaching strategies, technology in teaching, and assessment and moderation.
